Index to Death Records of Lucas County Probate Court , Ohio 1875-1990
Procedure: To search for years 1875-1990 using the Ohio, County Death Records, if you know the year of death, and if they were stillborn or adult.
1. Note year-of-death for the deceased person
2. Use the index weblinks below, to go to the beginning of the index of deaths for that year of death.
3. Note the column heading labels at the first page inward, since the heading labels are only on the first page. Generally, the index is in alphabetical order of surname, although sometimes the stillborn is in chronological order. There are usually 100-250 pages of deaths per year of adults, and just 3-4 pages per year of Stillborns in Lucas County.
4. If the person was a stillborn, the index is different than a non-stillborn. If you aren't sure of the age of the deceased person, you will need to check both lists. Go thru the index to find the person you are looking for.
5. Once the name is found, write down the county registered number, the date of death and the age. See the example of Stanley Michalak d.1952 below. [Note: If a column ends with "cont'd on page XX" you will need to page forward to find the continued data.]
6a. If after 1931, go to the death certificates of all of Ohio here and tag the year-of-death weblink that you noted in step 5.
6b. If before, 1932 it may be easier to skip to step 9.
7. This gives a page of blocks of Ohio reg#'s. These are generally in chronological order and they do blocks of certificates by county. So, from the step 5 month & day of death, make a best guess as to which block the cert may be in. In the example of "Stanley Michalak d. 1952" the month was "January" and the day was "13", so try the first or second block.
8. Once a block is chosen, page forward ~500 pages at a time to try to find "Lucas County" certificates. The counties are grouped in alphabetical order, so when you get to Lorain County, make smaller page jumps until you find "Lucas County".
9. If before 1932, it may be easier to use the page of death certificates of just Lucas County here and tag the year-of-death weblink that you noted in step 5. For this, the year-of death may span 2 or 3 weblinks, so pick the weblink based on the month of death too. But, this page has just Lucas County certificates.
10. Then, use the county reg# of each viewed certificate to know whether to page forward or backward to get to the reg# noted in step 5. {Important Note: Do not use the Ohio state reg# on top right of each certificate but use the one just below it that is the County reg#.}
11. If the number is not in this block, then you guessed wrong in step 7, so go back to step 5 above and try a different guess.
12. Once located, the image of the death certificate can be copied as an uncertified death certificate by downloading to your PC.
13. Postprocessing. I tag the download button in the upper right. This saves the file to the downloads folder on your C drive. I then, open the file in a image software like PaintShopPro, PhotoShop, etc. I first rotate the document to make it vertical, then I crop it. Then, I change the brightness and contrast to make the page white with black letters, then I de-speckle the image using the speckle removal tool on the image software. I save this image as a JPG. Sometimes the original with just rotation & cropping postprocessing is best.
14. The death certificate can then be attached to a F-a-G memorial as a "other" image. I label mine as "deathcert", so people know what the image is on the Find-a-Grave image listing for that memorial (w/o having to open it). The certificate is the proof that the deceased person was first buried in a given cemetery, plus it has info on parents and sometimes spouse. Maybe even veteran status.

If the index isn't above, you may still be able to find the stillborn death certificate in the list here from 1918 to 1990. Scroll down the list past "Stillborn births", until you get to "Stillborn deaths". Just tag the camera icon next to the film of interest and go to the item# for that year. In general, the counties sent stillborn certs to the state every month, so each month has the counties grouped A-Z.
If you find the stillborn in the index above, note the month&day-of-death and the cert#. which makes finding the stillborn cert easier.
